Semi-Formal Attire

Cortona is the most easterly of the Tuscan hill towns. The walled town, 600 meters above sea level, is essentially unchanged in appearance since the streets and palazzi were finished in the fifteenth century. Large areas are reserved for pedestrians throughout the day making a restful though busy atmosphere. It is rich in archeological wonders from the Etruscan, Medieval, Roman, and Renaissance eras. Cortona was made famous by Frances Mayes' book, Under the Tuscan Sun, but it was put on the map by the Etruscans, who have left tombs everywhere around the hill of which Cortona was built upon.

The Cathedral of Cortona stands on the remainder of Etruscan and Medieval walls. A Romanesque parish was built on this site around 1000. Construction of the present church began in 1480 and finished in 1507.
